Zyprexa and Hyperglycemia

Simply put, hyperglycemia is an elevation of the concentration of sugar in the blood, called glucose. This substance is created through digestion of carbohydrates, and cells throughout the body combine glucose with the oxygen of the blood to fuel all cell processes. The pancreas secretes a hormone called insulin which extracts the sugar from the bloodstream and transfers it into the cells. When the body becomes resistant to insulin it cannot extract the sugar from glucose and causes hyperglycemia.

Hyperglycemia is most frequently found in patients with diabetes mellitus type II. Advanced hyperglycemia results in severe dehydration, and causes the blood to become thick and syrupy, and if left unchecked can cause blindness, renal failure, and death. While not immediately dangerous, glucose levels increase over time and can suddenly cause ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar syndrome, or even coma. Zyprexa has been shown to increase insulin resistance, which inhibits extraction of glucose from blood and leads to hyperglycemia. Patients unaware of such a situation often confuse symptoms of hyperglycemia with the flu, with potentially deadly consequences.

Unintended side effects such as hyperglycemia are unfair consequences of taking a prescription medication, and you shouldn't be held responsible for your suffering.
