Zyprexa and Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's disease is a condition that primarily affects elderly people and is characterized by severe loss of memory, dementia, and behavior change. These changes were considered to be a normal part of aging until the 1960's when research suggested that degenerating brain tissue most likely causes the disease. Scientists are still at a loss to explain the exact cause of this degeneration, but they speculate that both environmental and hereditary factors significantly contribute to this debilitating condition. At present there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, and post-diagnosis survival rates range from 10-12 years.

Because Alzheimer's shares many of the same symptoms of schizophrenia such as dementia, hallucinations, and aggressiveness, it was thought that atypical antipsychotics such as Zyprexa would help remedy the similar condition. Initial reports confirmed significant advances, and it appeared that these new drugs could revolutionize treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Unfortunately, due to the cardiovascular disruptions they cause, similar drugs were found to cause strokes in elderly patients. Nevertheless, Zyprexa remains a legal drug, earning profits in excess of $4.3 billion annually for its manufacturer Eli Lilly.

If a loved one took Zyprexa to combat the terrible symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and then in turn suffered from any of the negative side effects of the medication, you may have a right to seek compensation your experience. Contact our lawyers today for a free case review.
