Black Box Warnings on Zyprexa

Black Box Warnings on Zyprexa

There have been many adjustments to the warning labels of Zyprexa. Initially documentation for Zyprexa concentrated on describing the side effects of previous antipsychotics, such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome, which causes fever, sweats, and muscle rigidity, extrapyramidal symptoms that affected movement and coordination, tardive dyskinesia responsible for spastic and uncontrollable movements. As projected, Zyprexa caused fewer of these symptoms than previous drugs, but unfortunately showed an increase in diabetic-related conditions such as ketoacidosis, hyperglycemia, and coma.

Following public outcry over deaths surrounding Zyprexa, the FDA mandated that all "atypical" antipsychotics like Zyprexa warn patients and doctors about the risk of diabetic complications. Despite further research and warning, diabetic deaths continued to rise. Eli Lilly & Co made a tidy profit nonetheless, reaping 4.3 billion dollars in annual Zyprexa sales.
